I didn't mean to ignore Justin Broadrick
Beyond a shadow of a doubt, missing Jesu was one of the absolute worst experiences of my life. To be 100% truthful, I didn't entirely miss their set, but catching the last 2 songs simply isn't enough, even if one of them was the peerless "Friends Are Evil." I'm not sure when the opportunity will arise once more to see them, but I'm there for sure. Come to think of it, Jesu seems to be exploding these days (from a relative commercial standpoint, at least), so that chance may very well rear its head quite soon. As saddened as I was, knowing that Isis' set drew near strengthened my resolve and the night ended on a good note as Isis slew all in their path. Their set consisted mostly of In the Absence of Truth songs, but a tune from Oceanic and Panopticon snuck in as well. They returned for an encore and improvised for about 3 minutes (which was pretty righteous to this reviewer) before unleashing the first song off of Celestial, so I pretty much achieved Nirvana right then and there and all the wrongs of the evening were set right. It was kind of weird seeing that Aaron Turner plays with a Telecaster, but it's cool, no worries; I just never once in my life pictured tuning a Tele down to F# (reportedly, at least; I'll have to do a bit of research to be certain). Isis undoubtedly are on the up and up and hopefully will remain mainstays of passionate, aggressive music for years to come; I wish I could have seen them live back when Oceanic was released, but better late than never, eh? Stay tuned, as 1349 will be on the prowl on these shores and your intrepid reviewer will be there to witness, for sure.
Love,
Ian
